This grey flannel fabric with grid lines is made especially for designing quilts.  Hang it up on a wall or over a door and then just place your fabrics on.  You can take them off and move them around as much as you want.  And if you are like me and share your creative space you can just tak it down and fold it up when it is not is use.

I have also had Mum's buy it for children to use as picture boards - cut out fabric or felt shapes and let your kids create their own pictures.
